Christmas Time in Maastricht

We spent this Christmas in Maastricht, just the two of us. It's the first time either of us hasn't been home for Christmas, so that was a mixture of sad, interesting, and relaxing.

Maastricht gets covered in beautiful Christmas decorations, so that helped make the sad times only fleeting. How can you be sad looking at all the gorgeous lights?

The Onze Lieve Vrouweplein had balls of lights up in the tree branches, which was just magical.

The view, just a block from our apartment, looking in the direction of the river.

Plus, there are the Christmas markets. We only went to the one in Aachen (Germany), and very quickly walked through the one here in Maastricht, because we just weren't going to buy anything. But they're very beautiful here, and I'm glad we experienced them.

The one in Aachen was greatly enhanced by all the good food (those chocolate tools are so cool, and some of them actually have moving parts!), and the gluhwein (mulled wine).

Plus, the little cups you buy for your Gluhwein at the Aachen market were so cute! You could return them for a refund at the end, but we kept ours of course!

The market here was set up in the Vrijthof with a ferris wheel, lots of pretty trees, and a skating rink.

I also decorated our apartment as much as I could without putting any holes in the walls, without buying much, and without a tree. Of course this meant crochet decorations.

Our Christmas day was spent entirely inside, which just never happens, there's always somewhere to travel to back home.

I baked, Michel rotisseried a chicken, we made mulled wine, and we watched Christmas movies. All in all, a very unique Christmas at the very least.
